A coil spring, often called a helical spring, is a mechanical element designed to store mechanical energy and release it as needed, absorb impacts, or apply a continuous force between two surfaces. It is produced from an elastic material shaped into a helix, which enables it to return to its original form once the load is removed.
Beyond compression and extension functions, a coil spring may also operate in torsion. In this application, the spring is twisted around its helical axis, subjecting the material to bending stresses that alter the helix diameter. Under torsional loading, the spring’s behavior and performance are governed mainly by the Young’s Modulus of the material.
